White represents inclusive acceptance, hope, open minds, pure and thoughtful actions, friendly impressions, and blank canvases that are receptive to any positive vision. Because white is actually all the colors of the rainbow, multi-color enchantment is in the air with blowing bubbles, the wearing of fairy wings, and spreading glittery pixie dust is encouraged! It is a chance to dress in white and rainbow colors be magical, shiny, and show off every color of the visible spectrum! Bright tye-dyes are perfect!

Forage Gifts & Northwest Treasures at 121 W Washington Street is hosting a launch party to unveil its own unique brand of postcards created from local photographers during the art walk. They are excited to present the selected photos and photographers and announce the winners of our Official Photo Contest.

Rainshadow Café at 157 W Cedar St. has live music with band Antbath! This 4 piece instrumental band out of Port Angeles takes its cues from early surf music, Lo-Fi garage rock, and modern psychedelia. Warning excessive Reverb! Their full menu will be available including some specialty small eats, flat breads, beer, wine, and, of course, the peninsula’s best coffee roasted on site.

The Sequim Library at 630 N Sequim Avenue has an artist reception for Pamela Hastings celebrating the opening of the new Art in the Library exhibit at 6:00 PM, immediately preceding the performance at 6:30 PM by Just In Tyme. Pamela Hastings is a sculptor, painter, writer, and teacher. Especially known for her work with life-change via doll making, her book, “Doll Making as a Transformative Process”, is used in art therapy courses in the US and Australia. This new Art in the Library exhibit features painted portraits. Just In Tyme plays memorable hit tunes of the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Just In Tyme blends the sweet sounds of gospel by vocalist Mary Charles, lush harmonies with jazz vocalist Olga Palenga, all around musicianship of Becky McKinley, Richard Crowell on electric guitar, and Sandi Lockwood on drums and keyboard.

City Arts Advisory Commission (CAAC) invites the public to the Sequim Civic Center at 152 W. Cedar Street for the opening of “Metamorphosis: An Exhibition of Fiber Art” presented by the members of the North Peninsula Chapter of the Surface Design Association (SDA) from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Works include quilts, felted pieces, fiber jewelry, hand weaving, garments, and other fiber mixed media. Light refreshments and snacks will be available. The Surface Design Association is an international community engaged in the creative exploration of fiber and fabric. The North Peninsula chapter is a diverse group of fiber artists who live in and around the Olympic Peninsula. With more than 30 artists and crafts people, they work in media ranging from bookmaking to quilting to fiber sculpture and beyond.

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. presents “21 & Having Fun” with Greg Felando and Nancy Lawrence, veteran member artists, curating the group show in the front windows with premier pieces. The show is a celebration of rich variety and contrasting styles, focusing on “having fun.” On June 14, 1997, the Blue Whole Gallery, an artists’ co-op with 43 founding members opened its doors. What started as “an experiment in excellence, a fine art gallery of professional artists pursuing creative originality” has continued and thrived to this day. Current membership includes painters, photographers, digital artists, sculptors, potters, fiber and gourd artist, and jewelry artists. As they begin their 21st year, they renew their commitment to present new and exciting shows with quality and originality. With thanks to enthusiastic supporters of the community, the Blue Whole Gallery will continue to bloom.

Olympic Theatre Arts at 414 N Sequim Avenue Sequim Ballet returns to Olympic Theatre Arts for a First Friday evening of originally choreographed dance at 6:00 PM in the Gathering Hall during the art walk. Advanced ballet students Saige Turner and Eleanor Byrne have choreographed their own dances to music they have selected themselves (“Gravity” performed by Sara Bareilles, and “Work Song” performed by Hozier. respectively), as well as dance to a duet to “Everywhere I Go” performed by Sleeping At Last, choreographed by Sequim Ballet director Laurel Herrera. First Friday Art Walk Sequim at OTA is always free to the public, where the snack and beverage bar will be open.

Herrera has choreographed more songs for intermediate ballet students, including a duet to “Moon River” sung by Audrey Hepburn and “Somewhere Only We Know”, performed by Lily Allen. “The theme of the Evening of Dance is ‘I Choose You’, says Herrera. ” I Choose You” is a song about believing in the magic of being together with someone you love. I always want to choose music to inspire my dancers to be better people and inspire our audience. I also want to encourage my dancers to be there for each other….be that angel that someone needs at that moment.” The performances final dance, “I Choose You” by Sara Bareilles, will bring our theme home. All of our dancers will be joined by 3 actors from our “Dance for Actors” class which explores basic ballet, tap and jazz used on stage.” Music and narrations by the dancers and actors will also be enjoyed during the performance. Madelyn Pickens will offer her version of Taylor Swift’s poem “Holding On” and Celeste (last name?) will be included with her lively readings, and Teija Dumdei will sing “The Rainbow Connection” and will be accompanied by her mother Melissa Dumdei on the piano.

The Sequim Irrigation Festival’s “where water is wealth” inspires the AQUA color theme celebrating cultivation and culture during the May 4 Sequim Art Walk. The color aqua expresses responsible, sustainable elements of cool fresh water, abundant salty seas, renewing rain, and bright sunny skies. Art and music inspired by our natural resources, creativity, positive partnerships, and revolutionary ideas are included in the May First Friday Art Walk Sequim. From our inventive cultivating irrigation ditches that make our valley abundant to our future forward-thinking ideas are highlighted at the Innovative Arts and Crafts Fair. Besides wearing the color theme of Aqua, everyone is encouraged to dress up in amusing and whimsical outfits for the Irrigation Festival’s “Callen Crazy Days”! Throughout the town, artwork created by our local students for the 2018 Irrigation Festival Button Contest will be on display at several Sequim Merchants.

In anticipation of World Accordion Day, Olympic Theatre Arts welcomes Ken Lillagore’s “Accordion My Way” performance beginning at 5:30 PM located at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Ken is quick to dispel the accordion’s cliché image. “When you hear ‘accordion’, the first thing that comes to mind is polka or Lawrence Welk,” Ken says. “I don’t play that music. I play the music I enjoy, like show tunes, ballads and standards.” First Friday at Olympic Theatre Arts is always free to the public where the snack and beverage bar will be open.

Rainshadow Café at 157 W Cedar St. is hosting live music with Bread and Gravy from 6 to 8 PM. They will have their full menu available and some small plates paired perfectly with local wine and beer such as Camaraderie, Harbinger, and Finn River, and Port Townsend Brewery.

The Museum and Arts Center features the “A Story to Tell II – Local Sights in Watercolor” by Shirley Mercer exhibition at 175 W. Cedar St. This is the second installment of Shirley’s “A Story to Tell” Series and new paintings of the Olympic Peninsula local vistas. There will be a demonstration with the artist on May 5 at 1:00 PM called “Photo to Finished Painting.”

Blue Whole Gallery at 129 W Washington St. features “Shadows of the past” with digital artist Marilynn Evans. Marilynn creates emotional reality from her original photographs brushed with refined technical skills. A tapestry of beautifully composed images will lead the viewer to the shadow of the past. The gallery will also present a silent auction window by the member artists in support of the scholarship for Sequim High School students.

The City of Sequim City Arts Advisory Commission (CAAC) is partnering with the Dungeness River Audubon Center to host the 2017 Audubon Society’s best avian photography. The photographs will be on exhibit at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 West Cedar Street and exhibit opening is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Meet the photographers and join us for an artist talk presentation from 6 – 6:15 p.m. Enjoy light refreshments before and after the presentation. Heather Roskelley is the 2017 Amateur Winner with a Varied Thrush taken at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle. Bonnie Block is the 2016 Grand Prize Winner with an Eagle and Great Blue Heron taken in Seabeck Washington Arboretum in Seattle.

Selected from more than 5,500 entries, the winning photos were published in the Summer 2017 issue of Audubon Magazine and show birdlife at its most vivid, vulnerable, formidable, and elegant. Photographers from 49 states and eight Canadian provinces submitted images in three categories: professional, amateur, and youth. A panel of five judges had the daunting task of sifting through the stunning images and grading them based on technical quality, originality, and artistic merit.

Olympic Theatre Arts at 414 N Sequim Avenue welcomes ‘Zorina Wolf and Friends’ to introduce you to the joy of African music starting at 5:30 PM. Wolf is offering is “an opportunity to experience joy and healing power of drum and dance. To discover how African music can make you want to get up and move! This performance will share the language of the drum rhythms. You will see how dance steps are mirrored by drum patterns, and how singing connects all these pieces together!”

Zorina Wolf has been teaching African drumming and rhythm training to children and adults for 25 years. She has been teaching in Sequim since 2009. The friends who accompany her are students who have also been bitten by the rhythm bug. First Friday at Olympic Theatre Arts is always free to the public where the snack and beverage bar will be open.

Local bluegrass/newgrass band Hot Llamas perform at Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. and enjoy award winning artfully crafted wines with the live music starting at 7:00 PM.

Handmade Green Journal with Black Coptic Bound by Jean Wyatt

At Lamb Farm Kitchen, meet artist Jean Wyatt and delight in her bright and cheerful paintings, drawings, and handmade journals at 272 W. Bell St, behind the Oak Table. Jean shares, “I like to create art that makes me smile and happy when I look at it. It is meant to be colorful, fun, whimsical, unusual and often a little off-beat. I have been doing some sort of arts and crafts as long as I can remember. My acrylic painting and colored pencil designs are whimsical and colorful. My handmade journals are hand bound and have either hardcovers or soft wrap-around covers.”

In the March front windows, Lynne’s focus will be on figures while Sue will display various assemblage sculptures. Lynne and Sue create from what they see, feel and imagine, allowing the viewers a glimpse into what inspires them.

Starting at 5:30 PM, Olympic Theatre Arts welcomes to the stage “Max” Eberhard Eichner as he performing traditional German “Pappenspiel” puppets at 414 N Sequim Ave. Traveling via bicycle from Bellingham and stopping to spread the joy of theater along the way, Max uses traditionally made paper puppets to tell classic fairy tales and fables from the Brothers Grimm, Jean de La Fontaine and more.

Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. will feature pianist and vocalist Dawn Martin performing a variety of classic favorites from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. She has played in a variety of bands throughout the Olympic Peninsula and as a soloist she plays a favorites from Carole King, Van Morrison, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Etta James, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Patsy Kline etc. Wind Rose Cellars bistro menu has food specials and small plates tailored to pair with their locally produced award-winning wines.

December 1 Art Walk Color Theme is GOLD and all that glimmers brightly! Gold is the color of our star Sol as we celebrate the Winter Solstice and the return of the sun during December. The impressive, shiny color of gold represents warm festivities, rekindled optimism, kindhearted deeds, admiration, prosperity, and lifelong fellowships. As you enjoy an evening on the town with family, friends, and guests who join our welcoming community, you will find works of art and folks supporting the option to dress in shades of gold or glittery interpretations of this festive time of year to celebrate happiness, harmony, and hope.

Special events on December 1:

At 5:00 PM, City of Sequim and the City Arts Advisory Commission Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Reception at the Sequim Civic Center, located at 152 W. Cedar Street. The holiday tree will be decorated with ornaments created by local 4th grade students with light refreshments. They all used different forms of collage in their artwork. Curposney Gdane is a collage artist who creates intricate pieces that defy reality and contain hidden surprises. Patty Waite is a photographer and mixed media artist who uses layers of partially-hidden collage in the canvas backgrounds her photos are mounted on and Sue Scott uses a mix of collage and assemblage to track the communal process of transitions in all their differences and similarities.

Filmmaker Andrea Love will share her films and behind the scenes stories, puppets, props, and fiber fun for the audience. Films include Tribeca Film Festival Official Selection “Fear” and real stories told by real puppets like “Revolution”, “Boulton Farm”, Finnriver Cider’s “Handcrafted Love”, “Bazaar Girls”, and many more. Andrea graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hampshire College in 2010, concentrating in film studies and sustainable agriculture. For the past five years, she has been living in Port Townsend, Washington, working on organic farms and teaching herself the tedious and addicting craft of traditional animation.

Dreamsickle takes the stage at 5:15 to 7 PM at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N, Sequim Ave. Admission is free, concessions and beverage bar will be open. Three seasoned musicians who were in the band for OTA’s 2014 production of “Summer of Love”, stayed together and gigged from Chimicum to Port Angeles. Dreamsickle promises a fresh and creative trip back in time to an exciting rocking genre drawing from the 60’s to the present.

Blue Whole Gallery’s “Rhythm and Shape” exhibit features artists photographer Katherine Loveland and painter Priscilla Patterson at 129 W Washington St. Award winning photographer, Katherine says, the theme is “Through the Looking Glass” from Lewis Carroll’s (1871) book. The window will display my macro photography which like Carroll’s book portrays familiar objects as unfamiliar, an alternative universe. Award winning artist Priscilla Patterson enjoys the opportunity to work in detail in watercolor as well as a little more free flowing in oil. Shapes and values are the challenge which makes painting fun. Combining the intricacies of manmade objects, buildings and transportation vehicles, particularly aircraft, with nature has been her focus for more than 30 years. Priscilla has been a member of the American Society of Aviation Artists since 1994 where she serves as Education Chairman.

Initiated in 2006, Renne Emiko Brock, Sequim Art Walk sponsor and producer, wanted to establish a free, encouraging, and inclusive event that included all forms of the Arts as an open invitation for our community to participate in an evening of talent, education, and validation of local creative efforts in over 30 locations around town. This is finale and silent auction of the three Keying Around pianos that have been visiting around town for the last month. Thanks to US Bank, Over the Fence and City of Sequim for the temporary piano shelters. There will be a street dance with music from Shaggy Sweet, 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Maggie May’s food truck will be there as well as The Cedars at Dungeness providing a beer and wine garden. There will be face painting and kids bubble parade. Fun for all ages at Civic Center Plaza!

Blue Whole Gallery presents “20/20 – a Vision of Excellence” is a 20th Anniversary group show in the front windows curated by Nancy Lawrence, Greg Felando, and Bridget Baker at 129 W Washington St. On June 14, 1997, the Blue Whole Gallery, an artists’ co-op with 26 members opened its doors. The gallery currently has 24 artists working with oil, acrylic and watercolor, mixed media, assemblage, photography, fused glass, ceramics, wood sculpture and turning, and jewelry.

The City of Sequim and the City Arts Advisory Commission Reception for “Piecing Together a Changing Planet” exhibition opens at 5:00 PM at the Sequim Civic Center at 152 W. Cedar Street. The display has been touring the country since December 2014. This is the only stop in the Pacific Northwest for the national exhibit and the last stop on the tour. The juried show of 26 art quilts was created by artists in Florida as a way to highlight a few of the many ways that America’s 401 National Parks are being impacted by climate change, water pollution, air pollution, and other human-caused phenomena. Maya Schonenberger, the exhibit curator said, “the artists’ goal is to help open people’s eyes to the beauty of nature that surrounds them, and share their concern for its loss.” The artworks were created by members of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), a 3000-member national organization dedicated to promoting the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications. Far from utilitarian quilts, traditionally used as bedcoverings, art quilts focus on layering, “thread painting,” and graphic design, as well as stitching and piecing. The exhibit is sponsored by Sequim’s City Arts Advisory Commission (CAAC) in partnership with the Olympic National Park.
