December 1 Art Walk Color Theme is GOLD and all that glimmers brightly! Gold is the color of our star Sol as we celebrate the Winter Solstice and the return of the sun during December. The impressive, shiny color of gold represents warm festivities, rekindled optimism, kindhearted deeds, admiration, prosperity, and lifelong fellowships. As you enjoy an evening on the town with family, friends, and guests who join our welcoming community, you will find works of art and folks supporting the option to dress in shades of gold or glittery interpretations of this festive time of year to celebrate happiness, harmony, and hope.

Special events on December 1:

At 5:00 PM, City of Sequim and the City Arts Advisory Commission Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Reception at the Sequim Civic Center, located at 152 W. Cedar Street. The holiday tree will be decorated with ornaments created by local 4th grade students with light refreshments. Dennis Smith and Sharon Dela Barre will say a few words at 5:00 and then at 5:30 there will be a ballet performance in the lobby.

Gold in a glass! Discover tasty crafted golden brews and treats at the Peninsula Taproom located on North 2nd Avenue at 210 W. Washington St., Suite 4.

Lamb Farm Kitchen Shoppe at 272 W. Bell St, behind the Oak Table, presents singer and artist Priscilla Patterson. Delight in her latest album “Christmas from the Heart” which features songs of love and friendship to celebrate the season!

Meet and greet the local artists at The Bag Ladies of Sequim at 161 W Washington St. filled with handcrafted works and artful up-cycled items. From 6:00 to 7:00, come in for a special “how to tie the perfect scarf demo”.

Blue Whole Gallery presents a group show titled “Winter Wonderland” at 129 W Washington St. to the community. The curators of the group show are Nancy Lawrence, a 2D and 3D artist, and Gregory Felando, a ceramic artist, will showcase the rich variety of art with contrasting styles and media in the front windows during the month of December.

Rainshadow Café at 157 W Cedar has live music with “Just in Tyme” a true 50’s band, mixing pop, retro and some Christmas tunes. Enjoy warm drinks and food while kicking off the season in holiday style!

Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. hosts Jenny Davis with flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny, George Radebaugh, and Ted Enderle. American musician Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation”. Along with this live music, enjoy award winning artfully crafted wines and appetizing tidbits.

Explore the three artists collaboration “Collage Barrage” exhibition at the Sequim Museum & Arts at 175 West Cedar St. Three friends from different walks of life met rather serendipitously recently in Sequim and soon realized that they had something interesting in common. They all used different forms of collage in their artwork. Curposney Gdane is a collage artist who creates intricate pieces that defy reality and contain hidden surprises. Patty Waite is a photographer and mixed media artist who uses layers of partially-hidden collage in the canvas backgrounds her photos are mounted on and Sue Scott uses a mix of collage and assemblage to track the communal process of transitions in all their differences and similarities.

Filmmaker Andrea Love will share her films and behind the scenes stories, puppets, props, and fiber fun for the audience. Films include Tribeca Film Festival Official Selection “Fear” and real stories told by real puppets like “Revolution”, “Boulton Farm”, Finnriver Cider’s “Handcrafted Love”, “Bazaar Girls”, and many more. Andrea graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hampshire College in 2010, concentrating in film studies and sustainable agriculture. For the past five years, she has been living in Port Townsend, Washington, working on organic farms and teaching herself the tedious and addicting craft of traditional animation.

To celebrate the season of harvest, Blue Whole Gallery presents a group show titled “Out of the Woods” at 129 W Washington St. The title of the exhibit “Out of the Woods” relates to the connection of fine works of art to humble earth source materials and the changes that results due to human imagination and skill. These results bring about creative examples of flower and fauna due to the natural objects found in the woods. The curators of the group show, Nancy Lawrence, 2D and 3D artist, and Gregory Felando, ceramic artist, will showcase the rich variety of art with contrasting styles and media.

Nourish has on display James Jackson’s photography with a reception starting at 4 PM at 1345 S Sequim Ave. They offer small complimentary appetizers and the full bar will be open for guests to enjoy as they mingle and chat with James. From James’ artist statement, “By striving to create striking photographs of the places I visit, and by sharing those images with others, I hope to assist in bringing knowledge and understanding of the beautiful, fragile and transitory nature we all must join together to preserve.”

Dreamsickle takes the stage at 5:15 to 7 PM at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N, Sequim Ave. Admission is free, concessions and beverage bar will be open. Three seasoned musicians who were in the band for OTA’s 2014 production of “Summer of Love”, stayed together and gigged from Chimicum to Port Angeles. Dreamsickle promises a fresh and creative trip back in time to an exciting rocking genre drawing from the 60’s to the present.

Fiber fun by local artists with handcrafted works and artful up-cycled items at The Bag Ladies of Sequim at 161 W Washington Street. All of their creations are one of a kind items that are handmade with several artists’ works for sale in the shop.

Local Yarn Shop at 213 E Washington St. hosts live music and motivating fiber arts demonstrations.

Pacific Pantry at 229 S Sequim Ave. hosts painter and singer Priscilla Patterson. She will have her new CD “Christmas from the Heart” featuring songs of love and friendship to celebrate the season.

City of Sequim Arts Commission presents the “Found Art Exhibit” at the Sequim Civic Center lobby at 152 W Cedar St. The art exhibited is a collection of collected items that the artists have made into art from many interesting things. Art made from driftwood, yard tools, shells, paper, and many other interesting mediums on display. During the October 6 Art Walk, three free workshops are available, 5:15pm Gavin Wuttken from Around Again will demonstrate making collectibles into art, 6:00pm Tim and Toy from Saturday Markets Steampunk Art will be sharing their craft and at 6:45 Mary Beth Beuke will demonstrate how she makes sea glass into art. This exhibit will be in City Hall from October thru December 2017.

Blue Whole Gallery’s “Rhythm and Shape” exhibit features artists photographer Katherine Loveland and painter Priscilla Patterson at 129 W Washington St. Award winning photographer, Katherine says, the theme is “Through the Looking Glass” from Lewis Carroll’s (1871) book. The window will display my macro photography which like Carroll’s book portrays familiar objects as unfamiliar, an alternative universe. Award winning artist Priscilla Patterson enjoys the opportunity to work in detail in watercolor as well as a little more free flowing in oil. Shapes and values are the challenge which makes painting fun. Combining the intricacies of manmade objects, buildings and transportation vehicles, particularly aircraft, with nature has been her focus for more than 30 years. Priscilla has been a member of the American Society of Aviation Artists since 1994 where she serves as Education Chairman.

Initiated in 2006, Renne Emiko Brock, Sequim Art Walk sponsor and producer, wanted to establish a free, encouraging, and inclusive event that included all forms of the Arts as an open invitation for our community to participate in an evening of talent, education, and validation of local creative efforts in over 30 locations around town. At the “Asian Flair” exhibit, there are presenters in the council chambers with several artists throughout the evening: 5:00 p.m. Janie Redifer of Port Ludlow is a certified ikebana instructor, 5:45 p.m. Roxanne Grinstad of Port Angeles is a certified Asian brush painting teacher, and at 6:30 p.m. Emily Hu of Sequim, Owner of Roji Home & Garden, is presenting on ideas to add Asian Flair to your garden.

Blue Whole Gallery presents “20/20 – a Vision of Excellence” is a 20th Anniversary group show in the front windows curated by Nancy Lawrence, Greg Felando, and Bridget Baker at 129 W Washington St. On June 14, 1997, the Blue Whole Gallery, an artists’ co-op with 26 members opened its doors. The gallery currently has 24 artists working with oil, acrylic and watercolor, mixed media, assemblage, photography, fused glass, ceramics, wood sculpture and turning, and jewelry.

The City of Sequim and the City Arts Advisory Commission Reception for “Piecing Together a Changing Planet” exhibition opens at 5:00 PM at the Sequim Civic Center at 152 W. Cedar Street. The display has been touring the country since December 2014. This is the only stop in the Pacific Northwest for the national exhibit and the last stop on the tour. The juried show of 26 art quilts was created by artists in Florida as a way to highlight a few of the many ways that America’s 401 National Parks are being impacted by climate change, water pollution, air pollution, and other human-caused phenomena. Maya Schonenberger, the exhibit curator said, “the artists’ goal is to help open people’s eyes to the beauty of nature that surrounds them, and share their concern for its loss.” The artworks were created by members of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), a 3000-member national organization dedicated to promoting the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications. Far from utilitarian quilts, traditionally used as bedcoverings, art quilts focus on layering, “thread painting,” and graphic design, as well as stitching and piecing. The exhibit is sponsored by Sequim’s City Arts Advisory Commission (CAAC) in partnership with the Olympic National Park.

The Sequim Irrigation Festival’s “where water is wealth” inspires the AQUA color theme celebrating cultivation and culture during the May 5 Sequim Art Walk. The color aqua expresses responsible, sustainable elements of cool fresh water, abundant salty seas, renewing rain, and sunny skies. Art and music inspired by our natural resources, creativity, positive partnerships, and revolutionary ideas are included in the May First Friday Art Walk Sequim. From our inventive cultivating irrigation ditches that make our valley abundant to our future forward-thinking ideas are highlighted at the Innovative Arts and Crafts Fair. Besides wearing the color theme of Aqua, everyone is encouraged to dress up in amusing and whimsical outfits, including Sequim’s aeronautical emphasis, for the Irrigation Festival’s “Crazy Days”!

Burke Garrett at Olympic Theatre Arts on May 5

Devoting his time to playing and singing classic songs from the Great American Songbook, Burke Garrett will start at 5:30 at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center located at 414 N. Sequim Ave. “I cover the popular songs from the early to mid-20th century,” Garrett says about his one-man show. “I talk about composers, lyricists and the history relating to song writing in the 20th century.” Free to the public.

Come play this fun free game, a Sequim Merchant Group Event sponsored by Sequim-Dungeness Chamber of Commerce, taking place in 20 of Sequim’s Businesses and promoting the Olympic Peninsula BirdFest. Sequim’s Sunshine Café exhibits the art of Mary Leone Howard at 145 W Washington St. This exhibition includes a series of five, charcoal and graphite drawings of the Sequim Elk Herd. They were drawn as composites, from photos, taken by her husband and Mary, over a 10 year period, after they first arrived in Sequim in 2000.

The Museum and Arts Center features “Color and Texture: One Man’s Adventure in Quilt Making” an exhibition of Stan Green’s quilts at 175 W. Cedar St. The exhibition of quilts representing the progression of Stan’s styles over 16 plus years.

Painter Shirley Mercer art is on display at Wind Rose Cellars at 143 W Washington St. and enjoy award winning artfully crafted wines with live music of duo Bread & Gravy featuring a dynamic vocalist/rhythm guitarist and a versatile pianist.

Olympic Theatre Arts presents the Discovery Bay Pirates Reunion at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Fans have missed Discovery Bay Pirates since this popular Peninsula group disbanded in 2015, ending its long history of Irish pub songs, sea shanties, and other folk music. During the Art Walk, this great quartet will reassemble for a reunion performance at Olympic Theater Arts in Sequim from 5:30-7:00. Admission is free. After the Pirates finish, starting at 7:30, Olympic Theatre Arts will stage its current production of “Over the River and Through the Woods”.

Lamb Farm Kitchen at 272 W. Bell St, behind the Oak Table, presents Jan Kepley and his photography. Jan Kepley has been working in the arts of music, writing, painting, natural sound recording, photography and food creation for most of his life.

At the Gallery at 5th Avenue presents “No Limits” exhibition with a personal motto of “You don’t know you can’t do it until you try it!” artist Carol Wilhelm experiments with new subjects, new techniques, and new styles. Carol has had a lifelong interest in all forms of art, enjoying a wide variety of arts and crafts mediums including stained glass, silk painting, rug-making, knitting, crochet, sewing, collage and driftwood sculpture to name a few. Painting with North Olympic Watercolorists, her primary focus is watercolor but the gallery will also display one-of-a-kind Nuno-felted scarves, wall panels and table runners.

Lamb Farm Kitchen at 272 W. Bell St, behind the Oak Table, presents Jan Kepley and his photography. Jan has been working in the arts of music, writing, painting, natural sound recording, photography and food creation for most of his life. He started photographing in 1977 with a $10 Kodak instamatic camera. His work includes macro floral, scenic and concept pieces. Jan and his wife, Kay, began a fine art photography business, Natural Light Photography, in 1985 that grew into wedding and portrait work. In 2016 Jan retired from doing commercial work and returned to his fine art roots. They now use his photographs for website design, presentation programming, videos, wall hung prints and a greeting card line.

I like to create “emotional reality” as described by Skip Lawrence.”

She studied with many masters in painting, children’s illustration, sculpture. Her artwork have been displayed world-wide and this includes public murals. In 1991, she was designated one of the 75 best children’s illustrators.

Karin Anderson, a long-time member of the Blue Whole Gallery, is the featured artist for the month of February at 129 W Washington St. Karin will showcase her mixed media paintings and three dimensional assemblage pieces in the front windows. Her colorful, multifaceted award winning art work has been an inspiration to many. Upon her husband’s retirement this spring, the Andersons will leave the Northwest for Santa Fe, NM. Karin says, “While I’m excited about the future, this show reflects where I’ve been and how far I’ve come as an artist here in this place.”

“If I Were Me … I’d Know What I Want” by Pamela Ziemann

Olympic Theatre Arts at 414 N. Sequim Avenue presents Pamela Ziemann’s, “If I Were Me … I’d Know What I Want”, a one-woman show about finding your voice. The one hour show starts promptly at 5:00 PM. Ziemann plays seven different characters, all based on her life. Ziemann is the author of “Giving Voice to Your Cause”, and a 2011 International Book Awards winner for social change. Critics call her show entertaining, authentic, funny, emotional and poignant. A synopsis from Ziemann’s work: ‘A farmer’s daughter reluctantly enters a Dairy Princess Contest while secretly wanting to be at an Alice Cooper Concert. Her life spirals downward when she meets a New York fitness junkie and moves with him to Indonesia. Wanting breathing space, she goes back to her Minnesota farm only to find the land filled with genetically modified seed. Magically, a gnome shows up and hints how she has been modified too. It’s one woman’s 50-year journey as she searches for and finds her voice. This show begs the question Can you tell the truth while living a lie?’
